All About Simpsons Golden Naked Oats
If you've never brewed with Simpsons Golden Naked Oats, you're in for a pleasant surprise. Unlike most oats used in brewing, which are unmalted adjuncts, Simpsons Golden Naked Oats are a huskless crystal malt. This special malt offers a delicate, nutty flavor and a mild, grainy sweetness. It gives the wort a light golden color while enhancing the body and contributing to a smooth mouthfeel. It also helps create a creamy, robust head. And like regular crystal malts, Simpsons Golden Naked Oats work well for many beer beer styles, including American Pale Ales, IPAs, nut brown ales, amber ales and stouts. In other words, they’re highly versatile.
Simpsons Golden Naked oats are an oat-based crystal malt. Crystal malts undergo gentle warm steep during the malting process. This steep starts the enzymatic conversion of starches into fermentable sugars and caramelizes some sugars as the malt reaches its final color. This process eliminates the need to mash crystal malt and ensures that the malt’s unfermentable sugars will survive fermentation, adding sweetness to the beer.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) when using Simpsons Golden Naked Oats
What are some recommended recipes or beer styles that Golden Naked Oats can be used in?
This huskless oat crystal malt contributes a subtle nutty flavor, and its creaminess brings mouth feel and balance to strong, hop forward beers. Just like crystal malts, Golden Naked Oats are excellent in most beer styles that use crystal malts, such as American pale ales (APAs), IPAs, nut browns, and American ambers, where they enhance the beer’s malt character without overwhelming it. Golden Naked Oats are typically not a substitute for a recipe’s crystal malt, but they can supplement existing crystal malts or replace toasted malts like biscuit malt or victory malt.
What is the recommended percentage range for using Golden Naked Oats in brewing?
The recommended percentage range for incorporating Golden Naked Oats in brewing is typically between 5% to 8% of the total grain bill, and this range applies across various ale styles. The flavor contribution of these oats is often described as nutty and creamy.
How can Golden Naked Oats be used in a low gravity IPA recipe?
Golden Naked Oats work well in all American style IPAs, including standard, west-coast, hazy and low gravity session styles. Using up to about 7% in a 5 gallon recipe (12 oz, for example) yields a smooth mouth feel without being overly sweet, with a pleasant nuttiness similar to Victory malt.
Are Golden Naked Oats suitable for various styles of ales?
You can use Golden Naked Oats in any brew where you’d like a distinct 'toasty' or 'nutty' flavor, which is comparable to victory or biscuit malt. They are successfully used in a variety of ale styles, including APAs, IPAs, nut brown ales, American ambers, stouts and porters. In other words, they are useful in many styles. However, most brewers don’t use Golden Naked Oats as a direct substitute for crystal malt, but instead they may reduce their crystal malt usage by half and make up the other half with the Golden Naked Oats. On the other hand, some brewers will substitute their Golden Naked oats directly for toasted malts like biscuit malt or Victory malt.
